The plot propels the reader right through all of the action, and there never was a dull moment, hopping from magical corner to magical corner, learning more about the world and the rules and the mystery at the heart of the plot. This was a fast-paced adventure, and I really think the pacing was just about perfect for this book. Perhaps the characters weren’t the most complex or developed, but they were still fun to follow. However, there still was room for depth in the characters, and of course it was fun to watch Susan grow into her knowledge and power. It’s an interesting, creative way to distribute duties, and it was fun to read about right-handed booksellers and left-handed booksellers working together, to see how their own strengths played off of each other.įor the most part, the characters of The Left-Handed Booksellers of London played fairly straightforward roles: there was “the chosen one”: a young woman of mysterious heritage who has a special mission to fulfill, the charming but mischevious rogue, the highly educated bookworm, and several villains who are more than willing to get ahead by harming others.

Right-handed booksellers are generally the magicians and scholars, while left-handed booksellers are the specialists, fighting monsters and keeping order in the magical world. However, the handedness was fascinating – each child born into the bookseller family has their hands dipped in a magical cauldron to discover their handedness. I think most of us have read a hundred books about a young man or woman who discovers a secret magical society and then has to fight monsters. However, The Left-Handed Booksellers of London definitely put a new twist on some old ideas, and I appreciated its fresh perspective. I’ve backed off of a lot of fantasy novels lately because so much of the worldbuilding feels like every other fantasy novel I’ve read. However, Susan doesn’t get much of a choice – for some reason, the supernatural world is hunting her down, and she is beginning to suspect that it has something to do with the father that she has never met. Susan isn’t particularly interested in getting involved in the world of the booksellers, even if she is attracted to the charismatic Merlin, a left-handed bookseller who first rescued her from monsters and pulled her into his world. The Left-Handed Booksellers of London is an urban fantasy novel about Susan, a young woman preparing for college who is suddenly swept up into the magical world of the booksellers – an ancient, magical group who run bookstores by day and battle supernatural beings by night.
